Coaching Insights from Jim Knight and Friends

Jim Knight’s Instructional Coaching Group is publishing a series of interviews with professional learning leaders that explore the work of coaches and instructional partners. These blog posts (associated with ICG’s annual conference) are such a valuable resource that we wanted to call special attention to them with a blog post of our own.

Knight, as many of our network members know, is is a research associate at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning and the author of a series of must-read books for everyone who does the work of coaching or supports the people who do. They include: Instructional Coaching: A Partnership Approach to Improving Instruction; and High-Impact Instruction: A Framework for Great Teaching, and Better Conversations: Coaching Ourselves and Each Other to Be More Credible, Caring, and Connected.

And here’s some exciting news! Jim’s new book The Impact Cycle: What Instructional Coaches Should Do to Foster Powerful Improvements in Teaching (with a separate reflection guide) will be published this fall.

The Interviews

Jim Knight introduces each of these interviews with some helpful background and then opens the conversation in his typically inviting way. I’ve included a ‘teaser’ for each one.

The TLC Interview: Jane Kise

“Jane Kise’s book Differentiated Coaching was one of the first books published on the topic of coaching, and (it) inspired me and pushed me forward, not just because of what is said, but also because of how well it was written.”

The TLC interview: Russ Quaglia

“I asked Russ Quaglia to present at our Teaching Learning Coaching conference because I believe he has a critically important message: our students must have a voice that has authentic impact in schools.”

The TLC Interview: Michael Bungay Stanier

“Michael Bungay Stanier…has had a deep influence on my thinking. (In) my new book The Impact Cycle you’ll see his ideas everywhere. Michael is the founder (of) a company best known for teaching 10-minute coaching so busy managers build stronger teams and get better results.”

The TLC Interview: Joellen Killion

“Joellen has presented at (our annual conference) more than anyone other than me, and her ideas, and commitment to teachers and students inspire and educate me. Joellen is Learning Forward’s senior advisor (and) works with coaches, principals, district and state leaders to facilitate and support standards-based professional learning that advances educator learning.”

The TLC Interview: Jim Knight

“To kick off this series, I started by interviewing myself. Really. Here’s what I said to me….”
