My professional adventure at Learning Forward’s 2018 Annual Conference in Dallas began in the best possible way – by spending six hours with with school leadership guru Michael Fullan and his Toronto colleague Joanne Quinn. If you missed my live tweeting (smile) we’ve gathered those tweets together here for quick and easy reading.
For some brief background, I’m drawing on the materials you can find at the conference website.
Michael Fullan is the former dean and professor emeritus of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. Recognized as a worldwide authority on educational reform, he advises policymakers and local leaders in helping to achieve the moral purpose of all children learning.
Fullan is a prolific, award-winning author whose recent books include The Principal: Three Keys to Maximizing Impact(Jossey-Bass, 2014), Indelible Leadership: Always Leave Them Learning (Corwin Impact Leadership, 2016), Freedom to Change: Four Strategies to Put Your Inner Drive into Overdrive(Jossey-Bass, 2015), Coherence: The Right Drivers in Action for Schools, Districts, and Systems(Corwin, 2016) and Deep Learning: Engage the World Change the World (Corwin, 2017), coauthored with Joanne Quinn. He currently serves as an advisor to the Premier and Minister of Education in Ontario and is coleader of the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning global initiative.
The pre-conference session I attended was titled Leading Coherence for Deep Learning. Here’s a very brief and helpful summary at the conference site. I suggest you give it a quick read before browsing through my tweets!
The big idea: Leaders who thrive in turbulent, complex times bring people and ideas together to develop learners who can innovate, apply thinking to new situations, and contribute to the betterment of humanity. Explore a coherence framework that provides a dynamic, customizable pathway to build the capacity of your team to deepen student learning.
