Today’s resignation of Michael Sentance as state superintendent presents a renewed opportunity for all Alabamians to work together to develop a path forward for public education that benefits all students.
We Alabamians are at our best when we are open to new ideas, sharing and learning about best practices, and acknowledging that we can achieve more together. Divisiveness and in-fighting will not lead to improvements for Alabama’s students.
Today’s events offer the chance to start fresh by working together and focusing on issues that will affect our students for the foreseeable future. In the coming days, weeks, and months, Alabamians will continue discussing the state’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan, the next generation of annual assessments for students, and the process for selecting a new superintendent, among other critical issues.
We encourage state leaders and all stakeholders to move forward with open minds and a desire to collaborate in order to develop thoughtful solutions rooted in research and best practices that will benefit all students.
