AP Science Content Deepening Sessions at Thompson High School

Please review the session descriptions below and select the corresponding ticket type for the session you wish to attend. If you will be attending multiple sessions, you will need to register separately for each. These events are open to all Alabama AP Science teachers at no cost. 




AP CHEMISTRY ACIDS, BASES, AND BUFFERS CONTENT DEEPENING SESSION


Presenter: Jamie Benigna


Tuesday, June 18, 2019 – 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM


This one-day AP content deepening session will focus on the concepts of acids, bases, and buffers. The session will be designed to improve teacher understanding of the required AP Chemistry content related to acids, bases, and buffers, to provide suggestions for pedagogical approaches to increase student understanding of these concepts during an AP Chemistry course, and to familiarize teachers with the types of related questions that are commonly asked on the AP exam. AP teachers from across Alabama are invited to register. There is no registration fee associated with this event.




EVOLUTION ACROSS THE AP BIOLOGY CURRICULUM

Wednesday, June 19, 2019 – 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM


This one-day AP Content deepening session will focus on the teaching of evolution across the AP Biology curriculum. The session will be designed to improve teacher understanding of evolution-related concepts, to provide suggestions for where and how to introduce and continually reinforce these concepts during an AP Biology course and to familiarize teachers with the types of evolution-related questions that are commonly asked on the AP exam. AP teachers from across Alabama are invited to register. There is no registration fee associated with this event.




AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE IN A DAY


Presenter: Eric Muth


Thursday, June 20, 2019 – 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM


This one-day session will provide a wealth of helpful hints on how to prepare students for the APES Free Response section with an in-depth look at student writing samples. Additional time will be devoted to tips for preparing students for the math-related concepts covered in the APES curriculum. Finally, the presenter will lead participants through a sample APES unit by exploring the unit’s structure, pacing, and lab/activities.




AP PHYSICS ROTATIONAL DYNAMICS CONTENT DEEPENING SESSION


Presenter: Peter Sheldon & Mark Maddox


Friday, June 21, 2019 – 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM


This one-day AP content deepening session will focus on rotational dynamics. The session will be designed to improve teacher understanding of the required AP Physics 1 content related to rotational dynamics, to provide suggestions for pedagogical approaches to increase student understanding of these concepts during an AP Physics 1 course and to familiarize teachers with the types of related questions that are commonly asked on the AP exam. Mark Maddox, an ASIM Specialist, will also familiarize teachers with the Rotational Dynamics labs that are available from ASIM. AP teachers from across Alabama are invited to register. There is no registration fee associated with this event.
