Beyond the Score: Alabama’s AP Momentum and What It Means for Students

Across Alabama, a record number of students are taking and successfully passing Advanced Placement (AP) exams, reflecting growth in college readiness and academic opportunity. Beyond the scores, Advanced Placement courses offer benefits that extend beyond a numerical value. Research shows that AP participation is one of the strongest predictors of college enrollment and academic success. AP students, regardless of their scores, are more likely to enroll in college than their peers who do not take AP courses.

They also experience potential college savings by earning credit or placing out of introductory courses, and they tend to see higher early-career earnings. For example, in Alabama public and private high schools, qualifying AP scores of 3, 4, or 5 in 2025 translate into an estimated 99,576 potential college credits. At a cost of $407.33 per college credit, the potential tuition and fee savings to Alabama students and families totaled $40.56 million.

AP participation is also linked to higher rates of on-time degree completion, and these patterns hold true for underrepresented minority students as well. In fact, students who engage in AP courses are more likely to enter the workforce sooner, as they tend to progress through college more quickly. This research indicates that the most considerable predicted improvements in college grades and on-time degree completion occur when a student advances from 0 to 1 AP course and from 1 to 2 AP courses.

Behind this statewide success story are Alabama’s dedicated teachers and hardworking students, whose commitment to excellence has transformed classrooms across the state. Through professional development, classroom resources, and school partnerships, A+ College Ready is proud to support its efforts and help expand access to and success in Advanced Placement courses.

Expanding Access and Participation

The College Board reports that in May 2025, 28,817 Alabama students took 53,940 AP exams, earning 33,312 qualifying scores, a 15.6% increase in qualifying scores in a single year. These historic data points demonstrate that more Alabama students are engaging in rigorous, college-level coursework and earning valuable college credit while still in high school. Additionally, students of color showed significant growth in earning qualifying scores with a 22.6% increase in the number of qualifying scores earned by black students and a 30.3% increase in qualifying scores earned by Hispanic students.

Participation is only half the story. Alabama is also celebrating a 15.6% increase in qualifying AP scores (3 or higher) across the state, as more students are not only taking AP exams but also succeeding on them.

These trends reflect A+ College Ready’s mission in action, expanding access to AP opportunities through training, mentorship, and support for both teachers and students. Each year, A+ College Ready’s summer intensives and workshops empower educators with tools and strategies that open doors for thousands of students who might not have previously considered advanced coursework.

The continued and consistent growth of qualifying scores in Alabama reflects the support of the Alabama Legislature and the Alabama State Department of Education.  As a result,  A+ College Ready provides teacher professional development and support, AP student support through study sessions, AP exam fee subsidies, leadership training, and incentives.  These components raise both teacher and student efficacy and confidence to master college-level content in the high school classroom.”

Preparing Students for the Future

From Computer Science to AP Seminar and Precalculus, A+ College Ready’s early and comprehensive support for these courses reflects our longstanding commitment to anticipating Alabama’s academic needs and preparing students for an evolving college and career landscape. By introducing training, resources, and structured guidance ahead of statewide shifts, we help ensure that students and teachers are not merely keeping pace with national expectations but are consistently positioned at the forefront of emerging standards and opportunities.

  • AP Seminar, part of the AP Capstone program, is gaining traction across the state. A+ College Ready supports this course for English 10 students. Built with critical workforce skills, this course provides valuable experience in research, writing, and public presentation.
  • AP Computer Science is increasingly vital due to the lucrative job market in this field and because of future state requirements in computer science for Alabama students. Through generous funding from the ALSDE, A+ College Ready has been instrumental in training most of Alabama’s computer science teachers, usually brand new to these courses, to make it possible for Alabama students to have access to this important discipline.
  • AP Precalculus, introduced just two years ago, is helping students bridge the gap between foundational math and college-level STEM courses.

Student Centered

As Alabama broadens access to rigorous courses, the progress we celebrate is a direct reflection of the steadfast commitment demonstrated by both students and educators. Students continue to rise to the demands of college-level coursework with discipline and determination, while teachers invest extraordinary effort in preparing, guiding, and supporting them at every step. Their combined dedication is the foundation of Alabama’s accelerating success. As we look ahead, we remain committed to staying the course, continuing to expand opportunity, and pursuing thoughtful innovation that advances achievement for all students.
