In a report by Alabama Public Television, A+ College Ready was recently recognized for its contribution to Alabama’s success in Advanced Placement programs across the state. The report focused on the benefits that students receive from taking AP classes. View the story here.

In August, A+ College Ready hosted its annual Results Celebration in Montgomery to announce the amazing success of all A+ College Ready Program and Partner Schools. Specifically, schools within Cohort VI, which started the A+ College Ready AP Program in the 2013-2014 school year, were recognized for the growth they experienced during their first year of implementation. The Cohort as a whole, comprised of 21 schools from across the state, saw an increase of 81% in qualifying scores on AP math, science, and English exams. During this same time period, the state of Alabama experienced 8% growth, and the nation experienced 5% growth.

Both Governor Bentley and Dr. Bice congratulated A+ College Ready and its schools at the Celebration event in August. Governor Bentley was quoted saying, “It’s good to be number one in something other than football.” Alabama ranks number one in the nation in percent growth in qualifying scores on AP math, science, and English exams with 136% growth from 2008-2014. This is compared to 49% growth in the nation over the same time period.

Dr. Bice acknowledged that the investment of the Alabama State Department of Education in the A+ College Ready AP Program has been beneficial, as Alabama has seen remarkable growth since its inception in 2008.

In 2014-15, The ALSDE/A+ College Ready AP Initiative will support 118 schools in 54 districts. The program elements include open enrollment in AP math, science and English classes, increased time on task for students, intensive teacher training, support from master teachers, and stipends for teachers and students. The AP Initiative works closely with the Alabama Math Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) and the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) to assist all Alabama students in meeting the state’s College and Career Ready Standards.
