Program Requirements:
- Must be a high school student in Alabama (grades 9-12)
- Must show adequate writing and communication skills
- Must have an interest in advocacy and public policy
- Must be available to attend all meetings throughout the school year
- Must be able to access technology to join meetings remotely (e.g., by phone, Zoom, etc.)
Program Components:
- This program and its components are FREE of charge to all students. Students are expected to fundraise as a team for end-of-year trips to reach a group goal.
- Team meetings and student interactions will be primarily virtual with in-person meeting opportunities throughout the school year.
- In-person orientation for members in July.
- Ongoing monthly and semi-monthly check-ins with the group (these will be done remotely through Zoom, Slack, and other virtual platforms).
- Meetings with elected and state officials to advocate for the group’s policy priority.
- End of the program year group trip.
- Other opportunities as they arise!
The application includes an essay component with the following prompt:
What is an issue that you or your peers have experienced within your school? What impact has it had on your education? Please explain how you would address the issue and why it matters to you. (500 words)
