About the School
The mission of Pike Road Schools is to create a culture of intellectual curiosity where all students have ownership over their learning and are inspired to think, innovate, and create. We are driven by 13 belief statements and a vision that our students are lifelong learners who use their knowledge, skills, and influence to make the world a better place.
Essential components of our curriculum and learning design include but are not limited to project, passion and problem-based learning, multiple learning pathways, blended learning, field experiences, and community service projects. Additional curriculum supports are available for the areas of ELA (Fountas and Pinnell Literacy) and mathematics (Do The Math). The learning is documented within the structure of a standards-based assessment system which include the academics and dispositions (“Habits of Work”) our learners are expected to know and be able to do. Data notebooks, digital portfolios, learner-led conferences, and celebration of learning events are also part of capturing and sharing the depth of learning and mastery of content in various ways. Our proficiency in these areas is not yet complete but we continue to lean on Ron Berger’s Leaders of Their Own Learning to equip our lead learners to integrate these components into the learning experiences provided to their learners. In doing so, we believe the learning journey will be learner-centered so that the content and process is relevant for every child.
To ensure we are building this culture in an authentic manner, we see a need to evaluate to what extent our learners have ownership over their learning. If their ownership is genuine, learners will have a grasp of what they’re learning, appreciate the value (the “why?”) of what they’re learning, and where they are in that learning journey towards mastery of all academic and dispositional standards.
