Cherokee Elementary School is an intermediate elementary school in the Guntersville School System serving all students in grades 3 – 5. The school is nestled on the peninsula of Guntersville and surrounded by over 69,000 acres of water constituting Lake Guntersville. There are 398 students currently enrolled at CES, and the poverty rate among our students is 53%.
Cherokee has a great story to tell. The teachers at CES were listed in the top 10 for Best Teachers in the State according to Niche in 2018. The school report card score was an 80 for the 2016 – 2017 school year. In 2017 – 2018 the report card score moved to an 89, based on student achievement and growth. Last year, 2018 – 2019, the report card score soared to a 94. The success at Cherokee can be attributed to our growth and understanding in the Professional Learning Community (PLC) process. Each team meets weekly, analyzes data, and plans accordingly for upcoming lessons. Teachers look at both formative and summative data.
Cherokee offers many opportunities to excel beyond academics. Students are offered weekly classes incorporating library skills, counseling, drum/ rhythm lessons, and art. Additionally, students are offered an elective once weekly. Students may choose from outdoor adventures, technology team, strategic games, drum line, cooking, and art. Grade level teachers meet weekly during this enrichment time slot to dive into the PLC process.
