A+ College Ready Job Opportunity: Director of Counseling Services
Responsibilities
The A+ College Ready Counseling Director should ensure that the AP Training and Incentive programs within each school are promoting AP success and increasing college readiness for 6th-12th grades. He/She should be a champion in building programs and must play many roles, which include: developing the college counselors in program schools, advocating for increased college readiness, overseeing college readiness resources (including trainings, websites and scholarships), and maintaining the exam reimbursement programs. This person must be committed to the success of A+ College Ready and its program schools and will be responsible for driving progress and managing toward intended outcomes. The key metrics for evaluating the performance of this role are college attendance and graduation of students from program schools.
Responsibilities include:
Developing college counselors
Provides formal and informal training for college counselors (the most important ingredient to the Advisor role)
Supervises advising functions at the individual schools and coordinates with the district’s broader counseling team
Nurtures relationships with schools by building up the AP programs within program schools
Advocating for increasing college readiness for 6th through 12th grades
Works with and trains school representatives to increase pre-AP and AP program awareness, generally through 2-day conferences
Educates faculty and the broader community through conferences, college fairs, and seminars
Aids in increasing AP enrollment overall and fosters equity in AP enrollment
Overseeing college readiness resources
Leverages existing A+ College Ready organization resources (e.g. website) to ensure proliferation of pertinent information
Modifies materials to ensure appropriate state coverage
Stays at fore-front of the college admissions field and keeps up-to-date on scholarship opportunities
Maintaining incentive program AP exam reimbursement totals
Produces forms for reimbursing AP exam fees in each district (modifying existing forms as necessary to address specific district arrangements)
Manages actual reimbursement between the district and College Board
Qualifications
The Director of Counseling Services must have significant credibility within the state’s AP teacher community and with college/university admissions. His/her ability to build trust with Counselors in schools (based on strong reputation and credentials) is critical to the program’s success. He or she must be willing to work hard, manage many different aspects and people, and be flexible.
Significant counseling and education experience
P-16 Counseling and administration
P-16 testing, both at state and college level
Master schedule planning and implementation
Strong understanding of the curriculum, especially Pre-AP and AP courses 6-12th
Extensive knowledge of college/university admission policies
Strong network with Admission Officers
Professional development/trainer/ presenter- in local, state, national college organizations and conferences
Familiarity with financial aid processes
Relevant experience in managing multiple projects or clients
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Problem-solving attitude, including being flexible, positive, and service-oriented
Technology skills -Power Point, Excel, etc.
