We look forward to continuing the focus on internal coherence at our upcoming November PCN session. During this session we’ll take a deep dive into Chapter 4 of The Internal Coherence Framework, with focus on what makes an instructional task a meaningful and challenging one. To prepare for this session, we ask your team to do the following:

  1. Bring a “slice”* of the instructional tasks being completed by representative classes of students across your school during one identified time on a selected day. More specifically, identify one calendar date, a specific time (e.g., 9 a.m.), and one class per core content area (e.g., one English class, one math class, etc.). For each identified class, collect the information on the attached form (with accompanying copy of teacher-designed work samples, if available) from each selected teacher. Bring this information to the upcoming PCN. You will have the opportunity to use these authentic examples from your school as you apply and reflect on concepts and tools we consider during this PCN session. Note: You may also wish to involve non-core teachers in this activity, e.g., health, p.e., art, etc. This is your choice. In any event, you’ll want to have no fewer than four instructional tasks to review.
  2. Compile results from any of the rubrics or protocols/practices that any one of your team members used during the interim, and bring this information with you. There will be an opportunity to reflect as a team and share with others.
  3. Read Chapter Four of the Internal Coherence Framework, Developing a Vision for the Instructional Core, through page 71.

*Slice is a protocol for looking at student work. We’ve adapted it for this purpose. For more information, see https://www.nsrfharmony.org/system/files/protocols/slice_0.pdf
