Coldwater Elementary School is part of the Oxford City School System and serves approximately 350 students in grades K-4. We serve a diverse population with 61% Caucasian, 19% African American, 18% Hispanic, and 2% other and multi-race. We have 70% of our students who receive free/reduced lunch. Oxford City Schools is currently ranked as the 10th Best School District in Alabama. Coldwater was recently named the #2 Standout Elementary School in Alabama.

Oxford City Schools, including Coldwater Elementary, has East Alabama’s largest 1:1 laptop initiative. Students in grades K-1 at Coldwater each have an Ipad and students in grades 2nd-4th each have a MacBook. All of our teachers are fortunate to also have district provided Macbooks. 100% of our certified staff at CES has earned credentials as “Apple Teacher.”

Coldwater is an Alabama Math Science Technology Initiative (AMSTI) demonstration site. Our school schedule promotes opportunities for intervention and enrichment. A 30 minute (math) and 45 minute (reading) intervention time is built into our daily schedule for each grade level. Those students identified as needing pull-out services receive these from our intervention team of six individuals plus some classroom teachers. Classroom teachers also provide researched-based interventions, skill specifics interventions, or enrichment during this scheduled time. Our schedule design also allows common planning for all grade level and opportunities for collaborative weekly and unit planning, professional development sessions, and continued efforts toward collective efficacy.

Our problem of practice focuses on learning targets. Teachers and students at Coldwater Elementary have embraced student-engaged assessment as described in Ron Berger’s book, Leaders of Their Own Learning. Our focus this year has been on the use of daily learning targets to help students understand what they are learning and why.
